What Is A Podcast?!
It’s been a long time since I’ve written a Thorn Report. In fact, these stories are from 2011, from an adventure spanning three months, sixteen countries, and one World Cup of Darts. But don’t worry, …
This is an audio/text blog reporting on DATW updates, community news as well as world darts news.
We produce a weekly radio show in which we seek out different cultures from around the world that have a love for the game of darts.
A blog that covers darts, travel and everything inbetween. Discover a whole new world right here on The Thorn Report.
Our video section which will feature videos related to all content produced here at Darts Around The World.
An internet radio show dedicated solely to the sport of darts. Tournament News, Features, Interviews, Tips and Tricks, and more, brought to you by two Alpha Males in a very small room.
After a blissful night of rest at the Boathouse Hotel in Holyhead, Wales, I had a morning to enjoy before my train left for London. It started with another full breakfast of deep fried goodies–like sausage, eggs, tomatoes and potatoes, and plenty of coffee. Then, I just stepped outside and went for a walk on the cool cloudy Welsh seashore .
Just outside was the Holyhead Marina and Yacht Club, where I spent a few minutes scanning the sailboats in their docks, or watching gulls squawk to and fro. I clicked a photo of some lovely roses outside the hotel. To my right was town, after a long walk along the Irish Sea esplanade, eventually leading to The Edinburgh Castle bar and some dartboards. But, having done that walk twice, I decided to go left.

I followed the road to its terminus, where it quickly turned into a gravelly dirt footpath leading through the foliage to the breakwater wall on the yonder side of a small harbor. I studied the plants and berries along the trail, and stopped to look at a rocky inlet of sea grass and kelp, where rain runoff and saltwater make a brackish mix. Behind, two horses snuffed and ponied over to me, hoping for some fresh grasses to be handed to them. I plucked some long succulent greenery and feed the mother mare and her colt.
Continuing on, I came to a castled wall surrounding a large private property. There were some lovely thorns on a prickly bush; I took a picture. I studied the liquid horizon under the grey sky, hoping for some a rare sight of whales off the coast of Wales; nothing there. Looping around I trekked back toward the Boathouse finding another pair of picturesque horses among some native flowers and plants. But soon, my morning loop was over, and it was time to gather my bags and drag them toward the train station.
Thanking the Boathouse staff, I stepped outside and awaited a cab. My train departed about noon, but I hadn’t yet bought a ticket. This was a mistake. Had I bought it the night before, I could have gotten it for the equivalent of forty or so dollars–as it was, it cost about hundred for a four hour rail ride to London. (Note to self and other wannabe-savvy travelers, never buy last minute tickets in Europe, always look and book ahead.)
Feeling a bit stupid for not knowing better, I boarded the train and began scanning the countryside as Wales fell behind and England approached. This would be my first visit to the famous city of London, home to the Royal Family, future site of the 2012 Olympics, headquarters of the once world-dominant English Empire, and current capital and mecca of darts around the globe.
Believe it or not, I didn’t plan to spend more than a few hours there. The way I figure it, if my life goes the way I hope, my writing, reporting and support for my favorite sport will bring me back to London many many times.
Over and double out.
